Kurnell is a small suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated about 10-15 minutes drive from Cronulla, on the Kurnell peninsula, and looks out over Botany Bay towards the city. It is home to approximately 3000 people. It is considered to be "the birthplace of modern Australia" as it is home to the place where Captain Cook landed when navigating his way to Australia. This is located within the national park, directly to the suburb's east. Also located at Kurnell is the Caltex oil refinery, and it is soon to be home to a controversial desalination plant, that is expected to provide much of southern Sydney with an alternative water supply, and which has been criticised on environmental grounds (greenhouse gases and impact of large amounts of deoxygenated brine). There is also a small light industrial area. One may also access Cape Solander, which is popular amongst whale watchers during the migration season. For a long time there was sand mining in this area, and so much of the sand that was originally here is now gone. Some of the remaining sand dunes are used as a recreational off-road area for 4 wheel drives.
